Heat Pumps

A heat pump looks just like an air conditioner, and actually functions like one to. So what’s the difference? A heat pump can also heat your home. Heat pumps are all electric, and provide heat by reversing the cooling process. Sound confusing? Keep reading…

Your home is kept comfortable by moving heat energy. In the summer you want heat energy moved out of the home. Air conditioners and heat pumps move heat energy by compressing a gas called refrigerant. When compressed, the refrigerant turns into a chilled liquid which is then pumped inside the home to the indoor coil. The indoor coil is series of metal tubing. The fan motor in the air handler pulls warm air from the home and forces it through the chilled coil. The refrigerant absorbs heat energy from the air which cools it.

So again, the difference in a heat pump and an air conditioner is the heat pump can reverse the cooling process. In colder weather, a heat pump moves heat energy from the outside air, and warms the air inside. You see, even cold air still has heat energy. Heat pumps are great for milder winter climates, but a gas furnace is more efficient and capable of heating when winter temps approach freezing.
